DRIVING FORCE

Jamie won the Microsoft Research Prize for the best Undergraduate dissertation during his Bachelor’s at Oxford College where he went on to pursue a PhD too. At Oxford, Jamie was closely involved with departmental teaching and also tutored visiting students. That was where his passion for teaching sparked, he was even more sure about his purpose after joining his alma mater Tiffin School as a teacher. There was no stopping him after this move!

Apart from being a dedicated teacher, he has always been a curious one. According to one of his students, Jamie sees teaching “as an opportunity to perhaps discover new aspects of well-known ideas.”

IMPACT

What started as a website to help students in his school with mathematics garnered national attention and free teaching resources from the website have now been downloaded 7 million times. It serves as an online learning platform with multiple videos, exam questions and more – all free of cost. In 2016, he even received a Grant from the Mayor for London’s Office to create a homework platform for mathematics. Currently, it has over 200 million questions answered and over 8700 schools in the UK and globally use it. It gets a whopping 3 million daily views and clearly, the students love the interaction between education and technology.

Despite the success, Jamie has stuck to keeping the portal free of charge as he believes social change is possible when educational opportunities are accessible.

CHALLENGE

Disparity between educational provisions always existed but the pandemic brought on a newer set of challenges. When everything became virtual, students started receiving lesser guidance from the teachers. Course materials and resources were shared with a lack of direction, and this has led to a huge group of students who have not been able to keep up. Because of this, they are now facing difficulties in catching up and the online platform helped with that. It gave them the confidence to learn with ease, at their own pace and with a big pool of resources waiting for them.

The core challenges when it comes to education remain digitization and education inequality – both of which Dr. Frost aims to play a role in alleviating.

STEP FORWARD

In partnership with Ranjitsinh Disale Foundation, Dr. Jamie Frost will continue to work in the hope of global education, which is accessible and exciting for all students.

With the first round of funding, the prize money has been donated to a charity (Charity Commission) to raise funds for server costs and staff.
